Food Group

With food prices climbing ever higher and talk of ‘growing your own’ making a real come back, we are well placed in Ottery to build on the already strong tradition of allotment and back garden vegetable growing. Now Sustainable Ottery is looking to start a food group to get more people involved in growing, sharing, preserving and cooking our own food within the community. Calling all growers: whether you do it in poly tunnels, on the allotment, or in the back garden; if your interest is growing or eating food we’d love to hear from you. To find our more and get involved e-mail food@sustainableottery.org.uk

Awareness Raising and Communications

We are busy planning our autumn schedule to include film showings and 'Hot Potatoes' a series of evening debates on topics relevant to transition such as food security, energy and transport.

One of the main thrusts of this working group will be talking to community groups in the town and surrounding villages about Sustainable Ottery: if you know of any groups that would appreciate a presentation please contact us.

To make suggestions or get involved e-mail the Communications and Awareness sub group at www.sustainableottery.org.uk/

Celebration Launch

Our Celebration Launch was a great success; around 160 people came along to hear Rob Hopkins talk. All of the people there endorsed Ottery St Mary following the Transition Town route and we gained loads of new contacts and active supporters.

Make your home more energy efficient – it may even save you money

Local expert, Peter Addie is coming to Ottery St Mary to talk about Personal Action on Climate, Energy and Sustainability. We’re faced with advice from all sides on what we should be doing to lower our carbon emissions. Peter’s practical talk will help us sort through the claims and work out which things are worth doing and which to prioritise. Entry is only £1.

Friday 13 June, 7pm at the Institute.

Arts and Creativity

The Arts and Creativity working group met and has come up with some aims:

To enable the people of Ottery St Mary and district to get their creative “fix” locally To build a stronger, more stimulating community through involvement in the arts at all levels To enable people to develop creative skills that will be useful in a less “throw away” society To develop these opportunities in a way that is accessible to anyone regardless of age or financial situation.

We welcome anyone who is interested in the “arts” and any form of creativity, professionals and “just for fun” artists – actors, dances, painters, sculptors, singers – any art form at all. Please get in touch and look on the website for the date of our next meeting.

Sustainable Ottery welcomes new members. Anyone interested in finding out more can come along to Green Drinks, an informal social meeting with no agenda on the first Thursday of every month (8pm) at India Cuisine opposite the Church, join one of the working groups (energy, hearts and minds, arts and creativity, factory future, resources, locally produced food, and transport) or email: info@sustainableottery.org.uk. See www.sustainableottery.org.uk for future events.

Please pass this on to any relevant contacts you have. If you would like to be radded to the mailing list please let us know.
