Happy New Year! Sustainable Ottery’s new year’s resolution is to try and involve many more local people in our efforts to help build a more sustainable community in the face of climate change and depleting fossil fuel reserves. Please come and join us and spread the word!
This is just a very short newsletter with a reminder of forthcoming events. Headlines:
· Land of Canaan Footbridge and cyclepath – planning decision meeting at EDDC, Knowle, this Tues 11 Jan 2pm
· Car Club public meeting in Ottery – Thurs 20 Jan, 7.30pm in the Town Council offices
· African Drumming on Sat 12 Feb, 2pm in the Station Youth Club (note change from previous date advertised of 5 Feb)
· Next Community Market on Sat 26 Feb
· Local food event in Ottery on Sat 12 March
New footpath and cyclepath – please show your support at the EDDC planning meeting on Tues 11 Jan!
We now have confirmation that the EDDC planning meeting to approve the planning application for the new Land of Canaan footbridge and cyclepath/footpath from the centre of town to the Thorne Farm Estate/King’s School will take place this Tues 11 Jan, 2pm in the EDDC council chamber at Knowle, Sidmouth (as mentioned in the Dec newsletter). The meeting is open to the public and members of the public can make short verbal comments (though this is not obligatory. Just attending will be important). If you are free on Tues afternoon, please pop along to EDDC for an hour. We need to demonstrate to District Councillors that this is a project local people really care about – for the safety of our schoolchildren, for reducing car journeys and traffic congestion, and for encouraging walking and cycling in the town. We have waited a very long time for it! In the current climate it is essential that there are no delays and that construction begins in this financial year. If transport to Knowle is a problem for you, please ring Helen Collinson on tel 01404 814078 or e-mail info@sustainableottery.org.uk to arrange a lift.
Co-car club for Ottery?
On Thurs 20th January, 7.30 at the Town Council Offices (Old Convent, Broad St), a speaker from co-cars is coming to tell us about the benefits of running such a scheme. The co-operative car club for Exeter and Taunton is a not for profit organisation based in the South West. Currently there are 48 towns and cities across the UK representing 112,000 members sharing 2,300 cars. Is there enough support for a club in Ottery St Mary? Come along and find out more!
African Drumming
If your new year’s resolution is to do something fun, musical and cultural with others, why travel further afield? Our very popular African drumming workshops may be just what you’re looking for. The next drumming workshop will be held on Sat 12th February, beginners at 2pm, more advanced drummers at 3.30pm. The cost is £7.50 per session. It will take place at the Station Youth Club, Barrack Rd (ie main road out of Ottery to A30), on the Kings School side of the River Otter on the right hand side, a few metres from the bridge. For more information call 814217. Drums are available to borrow and everyone over 11 years old (accompanied by an adult up to 16) is welcome. Further African drumming workshops will take place at the same time in the same place on 5 March and 9 April.
Local Food
A local food road show in Ottery is in the planning stage for 12th March. This will be a chance for people to discuss ideas about making local food more available, how, as a community, we want to make this happen and is also a chance to enjoy a local lunch! More news to follow.
Community Market
The next SO Community Market will take place on Sat 26 Feb, 9.30am – 12.30pm in The Institute, Yonder St. Come and visit our thriving market, selling locally produced organic vegetables, free-range eggs and egg products, a huge selection of preserves and chutneys, apple juice and home-baked goods, plus greetings cards and local crafts and jewellery. There is also a Traidcraft stall selling those other essential staples, such as tea, coffee, rice and dried fruit which cannot be grown locally and are sold at a price and in a way that benefits producers in the developing world. Please remember that there is no community market in January.
