Community Market

PRESS RELEASE

Come to Ottery's community market for fresh cut flowers grown locally, renewable energy gifts, and much more, on 28th June.

The monthly market continues to pack the Institute with a wide variety of stalls. Many people report how interesting and enjoyable an experience it is.

A popular stall at the last two markets has been The Flower Field stall. The sight of the beautiful freshly cut flowers has certainly added to the charm of the morning, and Claire Gilles who runs the stall, and indeed grows the flowers, reports that sales have been very encouraging. Before she started growing her own flowers, she worked in floristry and horticulture. She became concerned that most flowers on sale at florists are imported from Holland which acts as a huge auction house for growers all over the world. She decided to rent some land and grow the flowers herself with as low a carbon footprint as possible. Flowers are at their best early in the morning, she said, and if they are cut then, they stay fresh longest. I grow them at Venn Ottery, organically, with no artificial fertilisers or pesticides. As well as running a stall at the market, she supplies flowers for special occasions such as weddings, and provides a weekly in season bouquet service. Her contact details are 01404 814173 or 07964 586464 or flowerfield@3dunkirk.f2s.com.

Another interesting stall to be found at the market is the Kaieteur stall, which sells renewable energy gifts, gadgets and toys such as solar phone chargers, solar radios and battery chargers, wind-up torches and MP3 players, and water-powered clocks and calculators. Michael also stocks a selection of environmental books and magazines. Formerly working in building design, Michael started Kaieteur only last year. I've been interested in the environment all my life, he said, and I'm delighted that Sustainable Ottery has started this community market, which I hope will encourage people to learn about new skills, and provide an outlet for local products, and promote a more sustainable life-style. Michael certainly does his bit to promote a more sustainable life-style. From his shop in Sidmouth, he offers an installation service for renewable energy resources, and sells a wide variety of locally grown fruit and nut trees and bushes. Michael can be contacted at his shop in Sidmouth, tel. 01395 515561 or email info@kaieteur.uk.com. He also has a web-site www.kaieteur.uk.com.

The next Market is on June 28th and opens its doors at 9.30am and finishes at 12.30pm. Refreshments are on sale. Entrance is free.
