Art and Creativity

Djembes and sekeres were beaten and rattled as the sound of Africa came to Ottery.

Djembes drums, traditionally made out of animal hides, and sekeres, instruments that are rattled and made out shells or beads, launched the first African drumming workshop to be held in Ottery under the banner of environmental group Sustainable Ottery.

The group currently meets at the “The Station” the youth centre in Ottery on the 3rd Saturday of the month, to learn new drumming rhythms and techniques under the guidance of experienced drumming teacher Nick Blore.

The first session, from 2.00 is for beginners; the second runs from 3.30 and is for more experienced players; however some people have started at 2.00 for the first time and have been able to carry on right through both sessions to the end at 5.00.

It’s a friendly and welcoming group, always looking for new players. Drums and other instruments are provided so if you fancy something different and very therapeutic come on down.

The Arts and Creativity group exists:
To enable the people of Ottery St Mary and district to get their creative “fix” locally
To build a stronger, more stimulating community through involvement in the arts at all levels
To enable people to develop creative skills that will be useful in a less “throw away” society
To develop these opportunities in a way that is accessible to anyone regardless of age or financial situation.
