Art and Creativity

Djembes and sekeres were beaten and rattled as the sound of Africa came to Ottery.

Djembes drums, traditionally made out of animal hides, and sekeres, instruments that are rattled and made out shells or beads, launched the first African drumming workshop to be held in Ottery under the banner of environmental group Sustainable Ottery.

Sixteen keen drummers, with the youngest being only 7 years old, gathered in the Old Boys School in Yonder Street to learn new drumming rhythms and techniques under the guidance of experienced drumming teacher Nick Blore. The rhythms and techniques were varied to appeal to novices and the more experienced drummer, and everyone joined in for the earth shaking finale!

The cost is kept as low as possible with the costs being divided by the number of drummers attending, the amount will be between £12 - £15 which can include loan of a drum, instruction and refreshments.

The event was so successful that three more dates have been arranged, Saturdays April 24 and May 22 at The Old Boys School in Yonder Street, Ottery St Mary. Start time is 2pm.
